Cyberstalking is the use of the Internet to track down, threaten, and harass individuals. The methods of stalking online differ greatly from those of the physical variety. The chief distinction between the “conventional” form of stalking and its high-tech offshoot is that cyberstalking can happen regardless of the distance between the offender and the victim. Physical contact is usually absent. Cyberstalking harassment generally takes the form of malicious rumors in online communities, offensive or threatening email, or attempts to disable the victim’s computer with a virus. Cyberstalking is a relatively new crime, having originated in the 1990s.
